Southshore District Calendar

Troop 230 of South Milwaukee receives the Milwaukee Veterans Council Children and Youth Award... more info....

Hello Southshore,
What a spring!  Southshore is having a wonderful spring.  Popcorn is up 53% from last year, Units are being created, and Scouting is in the air.  Now is the time to ensure that your Unit has leadership, has a plan for summer, and organizes a few events throughout the summer months.  Some really good ideas are Scouting the Zoo, CAMP, and Unit cookouts/picnics.

Camp
What is it that Scouts do?  Why do they sign up for Scouting?  If your answer is camp, then you are correct.  The boys that get involved in Scouting want to go camping.  It is where they learn valuable skills, spend time with family, and achieve advancement.  We have several different opportunities for camp.

In Town Day Camp is on June 21 (1 day) and July 27, 28, 29 (3 Day).  Both of these camps are at Wilson Park with the last day of the 3-day camp going out by bus to IMR.  If you are interested in these camps you need to get signed up ASAP!  Also, we have several Day Camp options for the Cub Scouts and of course LeFeber Northwoods for the Boy Scouts.  Information on the Day Camp option can be found on our site by clicking here

Fall Recruitment Training
August 19, 2010, 7:00 p.m., South Milwaukee High School (801 15th Ave., South Milwaukee)

Fall is the Scouts major recruitment time.  However, spring recruitment can give you a head start on ensuring the Scouting program is being offered to all of the boys in Southshore.  If you haven’t done spring recruitment in the past, this might be the year that you try it.  We have flyers, posters, and staff available to help you with all of your recruiting needs.  Simply contact your principal, get permission to hand out flyers and/or do boy talks and we will get kids and parents involved in your Units!

Fall Kickoff
August 9, 2010 is the Southshore Fall Program Kickoff Roundtable! (South Milwaukee High School, 801 15th Ave., South Milwaukee) This will be the start of our year long Roundtable program and a great information night for you and you’re Units.  Please make sure that someone from your Unit attends.  We have new calendars available in the Scout office and lots of great resources for you.

The Fall Kickoff and all of the subsequent Roundtables will be held at South Milwaukee High School, 801 15th Avenue at 7pm, in the Cafeteria/Library on the Second Monday of every month.  We will have a Commissioner meeting immediately before the Roundtable beginning at 6pm from August through April.

Fall Planning
It is never too early to get planning done for the next year of Scouting.  If you are curious how you should attack your early planning, or need some resources, please visit “ideal year of Scouting” under the Forms/Resources tab on this website and review the material.  There is tons of good information listed here that will help you design your year long program.

FOS Team
As we slow our 2009/2010 Friends of Scouting Campaign we have an opportunity to get ahead for next year.  If possible, once you have your planning done and know the date for your Blue and Golds, Green and Golds, or Awards nights and would be willing to have an FOS presentation that night, please contact Kurt Rusch to get that scheduled.  We would like to get ahead for next year so that Southshore has the best chance of accomplishing its goals and being a quality District.

We are also looking for Presenters, Workers, and potential community contacts for next year’s campaign.  If you have an idea please make it known.  The only ideas that are bad ideas are those that are not spoken.

Popcorn
As one Popcorn campaign closes another quickly approaches.  Did you meet your fundraising goals?  Is your Unit covering more costs for struggling members?  There is a ton of great stuff you can do with the money from the popcorn sale.  Remember, selling popcorn isn’t about the product it’s about selling Scouting.  There are a lot of fundraisers out there but Popcorn is the most effective.  It is how we maintain our camps, provide our program and recruitment resources, and maintain your high level of Unit service.

Southshore is AWESOME at selling popcorn and can become a quality District if we keep up our momentum.  Please include the popcorn sale in your upcoming Unit planning.

District Leadership
We have some great District leadership in Southshore.  Dennis Carney has done an amazing job throughout the last year of being the District Chairman.  His unwavering commitment to Scouting is truly something to be admired.  Please thank him when you see him.

Also, we have a couple of new District Staff members: Unit Commissioners that have joined our leadership team.  Kathie Potega, Chris Kujawski, and Mike Rolefson have all taken on Unit leadership.  Please contact them if you haven’t already and build a great working relationship.  Camp Promotions Chair: Joel Potega District Pinewood Derby Chair: Vern Snyder and Program Chair: Denise Taft.  Please thank them and congratulate them as you see them around the District.
